(Eunice, Sheena, Linh, Swati, me)
Each patient met with a group of 4 students and a translator. After finding out the name and age of the patient, we asked some questions that would hopefully lead us to uncovering the health problem they were suffering from.
- What is your medical problem?
- Where does it hurt?
- When did this start?
- Do you feel a burning sensation when you urinate?
- Do you have vaginal discharge?
- What color is it?
- Does it smell like a fish?
I got to practice speaking Spanish a lot on this trip. The most used new phrase I learned was “Tiene secrecciones vaginales?” (do you have vaginal discharge?)
The doctors would circulate around the room and come check our final diagnosis. Sometimes we were right, sometimes we were wrong. Then we wrote the patients a prescription for some meds or a referral to the health clinic.
